Hashtags have been a huge part of Instagram's algorithm since the platform launched in 2010. So imagine everyone's shock when Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri announced that hashtags do not help your page reach more users. He says that there is no "magic trick" that guarantees success on the platform. And if hashtags no longer have the power we thought they once did, the question then becomes, should we stop using them?
Though hashtags are no longer the "magic trick" to growing our Instagram pages, it does not mean we should eliminate our use of them. Hashtags offer one main benefit that has clearly been forgotten. They are a great search engine.
Every hashtag saves your content in a gallery with other content with the same hashtag, allowing others to find specialized content using this hashtag. I cannot count how many times I have used hashtags to find restaurants in my area, and I know I am not alone. Hashtags make it easier to connect with local businesses, but their value goes beyond that—they’re also a powerful tool for staying updated on trends, events, and conversations happening around the world.
At the end of the day, Instagram's algorithm may change, but people will always search for content that interests them. While they may no longer be a growth hack, they are still a great way to bring your audience to your content.
So the question is not be whether or not you will use them, but how you will use them to continue to attract your new and existing audiences.
